The TREZOR crypto-wallet turned out to be full of holes

This article is devoted to a new version of the popular hardware wallet for cryptocurrencies – TREZOR, from the well-known SatoshiLabs team, based in the capital of the Czech Republic - Prague.

This team was organized by an active member of the cryptocurrency community Slush (Marek Palatinus), who is known for a number of significant achievements in the field of cryptocurrency development. Among them:

  • creation of the most famous exchange protocol for mining pools - Stratum;
  • creation of the first, and still one of the most famous, pools of joint Bitcoin mining - Slush pool;
  • creation of the first hardware wallet for Bitcoin.

Purchase and delivery

To write this article, the manufacturer provided a free sample of the Trezor wallet. This device is available for sale at www.buytrezor.com and ships worldwide.

The device costs $99 and comes in three colors: white, gray and black. When purchasing all three devices at the same time, a discount of $21 is provided. Interestingly, the community has mastered the production of cases for Trezor in a wide range of colors.

Trezor from the inside

The contents of the sent hardware wallet are shown in the figure below:

In addition to the device itself, the kit includes two cables of different lengths, a bunch of stickers, and a blank form for code words (the so-called “recovery seed”).

Inside the case there is a board with a black-and-white OLED display with a resolution of 128x64 pixels located on it, as well as various elements, among which the central place is occupied by a 120 MHz ARM processor of the Cortex M3 family.

To implement user feedback, two control buttons are provided. Additional information on the internal structure of the wallet can be found on the official website, in the documentation section. https://doc.satoshilabs.com/trezor-tech/hardware.html.

Initial setup

The initial setup of the wallet is not difficult, but there are a number of features that need to be mentioned.

The documentation included in the package, as well as on the website, recommends starting to work with the device from the website - mytrezor.com. This site is a web interface for working with Trezor and provides all the necessary functionality for working with the wallet. You must use Chrome as a browser (on all three supported operating systems), since a special extension has been created for it.

However, I was somewhat surprised by the browser message that the extension that wants to use the resource is no longer supported.

To work in other browsers, it is possible to install an additional application called “TREZOR Bridge”, when launched, the “trezord” service is loaded, which launches a local web server, with which, in turn, other browsers interact.

To further configure the wallet, you need to connect it using a cable, after which the drivers are automatically installed and the setup process begins.

During setup, you need to set a PIN code to log into the device in the future. At this stage, new users often have questions.

The fact is that the numeric PIN code must be set via the web interface, but the numbers must be pressed in exactly the order in which they are presented on the device itself.

Moreover, the order in which the numbers are displayed changes with each PIN code request. This feedback implementation allows you to significantly increase the level of security when working with your wallet.

After setting up a digital pin code, you need to write down 24 words in English, which will be needed to restore access to your wallet if it is lost.

Each of the 24 words is displayed on the device’s display, and you are asked to write them down on the attached paper form.

After completing the initial setup, the name of the profile specified through the web interface should appear on the wallet screen. This means that the wallet setup is complete.

You may need to update the firmware, but this process is often straightforward.

Trezor Model T - new hardware wallet from SatoshiLabs, review and features

Model T is the second generation of the popular Trezor line of hardware wallets manufactured by SatoshiLabs.

The device was announced in November 2020, on the ninth anniversary of the Bitcoin white paper, and pre-orders began at the same time. All devices available for pre-sale have been sold out. Sales under standard conditions are expected to begin soon.

Bitcoin Magazine tested the Trezor Model T and shares its impressions. The matchbox-sized device is housed in an elegant container, complete with a USB-C cable for connecting to a computer or smartphone, stickers and other accessories, and a minimalist manual. The Getting Started with Trezor Model T guide available online contains more detailed instructions with pictures.

The device starts working only when connected to a computer and connects to the blockchain via a web interface. Unlike previous Trezor models with buttons, the Model T features a touchscreen display. Other differences include a new version of Trezor Core firmware, designed from the ground up.

Trezor Core source code is available on Github, as is other Trezor software.

In Russia, you can already order the new Model T from the official Trezor dealer in the Russian Federation, WALLETZ.

The new device comes complete with a magnetic docking station that can be attached to any hard surface, after which the Model T will be held on it using built-in magnets.

Bitcoin Magazine staff connected the device to a computer and began following the instructions from the online manual, which asks the user to open a supported browser and go to the Trezor website. Once the firmware was properly installed, the process of creating a new wallet began.

The site provides step-by-step instructions in sync with the directions that appear on the device screen.

Having created a new wallet, the user must immediately follow the instructions for creating a backup in the form of a personal seed for recovery. Model T generates a unique 12-word combination that is displayed on the device's screen. The user must write down these words on a special card (there are two such cards in the box in case one is lost). The device then randomly selects two words and asks the user to type them on the screen for verification.

A combination of 12 words allows you to restore the contents of your wallet in case of damage or loss of the device. And this is the only opportunity to “rescue” your cryptocurrency. Of course, attackers can do the same if they gain access to the seed, so it is important to follow the recommendation: “You must place the recovery card in a safe place... We strongly advise you not to photograph the card or make digital copies of it. Please do not write words into a text file on your computer, even if your computer is secure."

The next step is to set the device name and select a digital pin using the touch screen. An important security element at this stage (which may be annoying for some) is that the layout of the numeric keypad on the display changes with each input.

Trezor T is now ready to use. To do this, just connect it to your computer (if your computer does not have Trezor Bridge software and drivers, you will have to install them), enter your PIN code and use the web interface. The Trezor T's web interface and on-screen interface work in tandem, and often (for example, when sending funds) information entered on the site must be confirmed on the device.

In addition to Bitcoin, Trezor T supports:

  • Bitcoin Cash,
  • Bitcoin Gold,
  • Dash,
  • Litecoin,
  • Zcash,
  • Ethereum (via MyEtherWallet interface),
  • Ethereum Classic (via MyEtherWallet interface).

Trezor T has been tested as a Bitcoin wallet. Bitcoin Magazine staff first sent Bitcoin from external wallets in a series of transactions to a new Bitcoin address created by Trezor T, and then sent Bitcoin from Trezor T to external wallets. All transactions went through without problems and appeared in the web interface.

When Trezor T is not connected to a computer, it turns off and stops connecting to the Internet. Thus, the user's funds are stored on the device out of the reach of attackers. This device is a reliable and compact – the size of a matchbox – cryptocurrency “bank”. Of course, it is important to keep it and the recovery cards separately from each other where they will not be found by others.

Overall, Trezor T is convenient and practical. The initial setup process may seem complicated to users who do not have basic computer knowledge, but most cryptocurrency enthusiasts can probably handle installing the drivers manually (especially given the clear guide). Once set up, Trezor Model T is very easy to use, with a user-friendly interface and great new features.

  • You can order Trezor model T on their website https://walletz.ru/

Working with a wallet

Interaction with the wallet through the web interface is intuitive. It has exactly the same functionality as most software wallets.

You can view your transaction history, receive and send bitcoins, and send or verify a signed message.

In addition to using a hardware wallet through a web browser interface, you can work with it using a number of third-party applications.

It should be noted that it is possible to work using a mobile application for a smartphone on the Android platform, using an OTG cable and the corresponding API.

And finally, as they say – not just Bitcoin. Using this wallet in conjunction with Electrum-LTC and Electrum-DASH, you can work with the corresponding altcoins.

Trezor hardware wallets now support Monero, Lisk, and Stellar cryptocurrencies

The developers of the Trezor hardware wallets decided to keep up with their competitors represented by the Ledger company, which continues to delight its users with the constant addition of the number of supported cryptocurrencies, and also significantly expanded the assets available for storage.

This Wednesday they announced the release of firmware version 2.0.9 for Trezor Model T devices and version 1.7.1 for Trezor One. You can download both firmwares through the Trezor beta portal.

As the company explains, many aspects of the new Trezor Model T firmware have been redesigned from the ground up. This included rewriting the domain code using the Python programming language, which more developers are familiar with, while C was originally used for this.

“This solution was a great one, as evidenced by the huge community input into the latest firmware for the Trezor Model T ,” she writes.

With firmware 2.0.9 Trezor Model T now supports:

  • Monero,
  • Cardano
  • Stellar,
  • XRP,
  • Tezos,
  • Decred,
  • Groestlcoin,
  • Lisk,
  • Zencash,
  • Zcash (in the version that was launched on the blockchain together with the Sapling hard fork that took place at the end of October).

The Trezor One wallet in firmware 1.7.1 received support for the WebUSB interface, including for the TPM password manager. This allows you to connect your device via Google Chrome directly without the need to use Trezor Bridge. Trezor Model T had support for WebUSB from the very beginning.

Trezor One has added support for:

  • Lisk,
  • Stellar,
  • Zcash (updated version).

Let us recall that in October the Trezor Model T introduced the ability to directly convert cryptocurrencies.

conclusions

The Trezor hardware wallet is recommended for those who are concerned about the security of their funds stored in Bitcoin or supported altcoins. Moreover, the wallet is precisely an additional protection implemented by the built-in Cortex M3 microcontroller. To ensure protection, official implementations of BIP39 (for working with keywords), as well as BIP32 and BIP44 are used.

However, the wallet does not store the entire set of transactions, using external storage for this, with which the work is organized.

For this reason, this wallet can only be called a conditionally hardware wallet. Nevertheless, Trezor is quite popular in its segment, and this popularity is ensured by the implementation of user feedback, which is the “highlight” of this device.

Trezor hardware crypto wallets received an update with expanded functionality

Today, the developer of the Trezor hardware wallet announced an update to its devices and software functionality. Trezor One and Trezor Model T are updating their firmware with new features and settings that take into account changes in some cryptocurrencies. After the update, Trezor devices will be ready to update Zcash Overwinter or recognize cashaddr Bitcoin Cash.

Cryptocurrency support has also been expanded, for example, a firmware update for the Trezor Model T includes support for NEM and Lisk. Now Trezor can recognize new coins and tokens.

Trezor Model T also introduced new cryptocurrencies: Lisk, Bitcoin Private, Fujicoin, Vertcoin, Viacoin, Zcoin; and tokens: EOS Classic, Ethereum Social, Ellaism, Callisto, EtherGem, Wanchain.

It is worth emphasizing that the Trezor Wallet user interface currently only provides access to Vertcoin, while other coins are available in third-party services.

Trezor One has added support for Decred, Groestlcoin and the above cryptocurrencies. The list of supported tokens for the devices is the same.

Let’s add that in addition to Vertcoin, Dogecoin also appeared in the user interface.

Trezor Model T 2.0.7 firmware update →

Trezor One firmware update 1.6.2 →

Trezor 19 wallet release →

The company's blog recommends that Trezor One users with firmware older than 1.6.1 update to the latest version.

The developers warned Trezor One users that updating to version 1.6.2 will require completely deleting data from the device’s memory. To restore operation, you will need to use the correct seed phrase, instructions for testing which are available here.
