Many cryptocurrencies have taken off in the last few years. Of course, Bitcoin and such popular altcoins as Litecoin or Ethereum receive the most attention. But there are also underrated projects that are not often featured in news and reviews, but have also achieved great success. One of these little-known digital coins is NEO, or as it is often called “Chinese Ethereum”. The developers proposed an original approach to the implementation of the digital economy, and judging by the fact that NEO cryptocurrency soared into the Top 20 most popular cryptocurrencies with a capitalization of 693,682,685 USD in less than two years, the new concept turned out to be truly successful.
NEO cryptocurrency review
NEO is an independent blockchain platform for working with digital assets and smart contracts (Smart Contracts). Its prototype, the AntShares cryptocurrency, was created by developers Da Hongfei and Erik Zhan in China in 2014 and renamed NEO in June 2020.
The platform uses two different tokens. The first is called NEO, the second is GAS (gas). The main goal is to become a digital, decentralized platform for converting real assets into their digital equivalent through smart contracts.
NEO theoretically describes its concept as a Smart Economy System - digital assets + digital identification + smart contract = intelligent economy.
What does this mean in the real world? Let's break it down point by point:
- Digital assets . Through the use of smart contracts, traditional assets can be turned into digital ones and stored securely on the blockchain.
- Digital identity . The NEO cryptocurrency generates digital identities for individuals and organizations. To use them, you must pass multi-factor authentication.
- Smart contracts . Like Ethereum, NEO uses the concept of smart contracts. The difference is that Ethereum is based on its own proprietary programming language, Solidity, which greatly increases the barrier to entry for developers wanting to join the Ethereum ecosystem. NEO is a cross-platform solution. You can write code for the platform in C#, VB.Net, F#, Java and Kotlin.
Simply put, in order to service the ecosystem on Ethereum, you need programmers with a narrow specialization, which is quite expensive for business. NEO has no such restrictions, so the platform is becoming more and more popular, and its coins have risen to the top twenty in two years.
NEO cryptocurrency price forecast in 2020
This token, like many others, is distinguished by its decentralized nature. It does not depend on government or private entities, and the peer-to-peer network guarantees the security of transactions.
The main competitive advantages of the coin include:
- dBFT is a special consensus protocol that allows up to 10 thousand transactions per second;
- low commissions compared to other blockchain projects;
- limited emission (up to 15 million tokens per year), which eliminates inflation;
- lightweight virtual platform NeoVM;
- support for other ICOs and decentralized applications, the presence of such players as Alibaba and Microsoft among investors and partners.
Movements in the Neo cryptocurrency rate will largely depend on the preservation of current technical conditions, as well as on the emergence of new serious partners. So, among them, for example, there are a number of little-known enterprises in the Russian Federation, but very popular in Asia. There the project is assessed as promising for the subsequent organization of payment for goods and services.

NEO and GAS
The two native tokens of the NEO platform serve different purposes. In short:
- NEO is an investment token used to generate new blocks, manage the network, and perform other tasks that require interaction with other network participants;
- GAS is the main currency for transactions on the Neo blockchain.
The NEO token can be compared to a company share. It works in a similar way. Token holders can participate in network governance. For example, vote for decisions related to the development and capitalization of the platform or offer your own options for its development. All digital coin holders are united into a community. There is also a governing body - the council, which consists of the founding members of the network. He coordinates the remaining participants and makes final decisions on the further development and promotion of the system. There is also a Technical Committee, a Management Committee and a Secretariat.
GAS, on the other hand, has purely functional properties. This token is the digital equivalent of monetary assets. It is, for example, used for retail payments and storage of funds converted through smart contracts.
Simply put, the NEO cryptocurrency is a “stock” that turns users into “shareholders.” And GAS is their cash equivalent , which serves as a means of payment within the Smart Economy.
Regulatory framework and relations with the law
Here we get to one of the main features of this cryptocurrency. Unlike traditional cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin, Dash or Monero, NEO does not strive for maximum secrecy and anonymity. On the contrary, the developers are trying to make it as transparent and convenient for government monitoring as possible. Simply put, the state cannot interfere in transactions with NEO, but it can clearly see where and where the money is coming from.
To suppress various frauds, NEO uses its “digital identification” system. As conceived by the developers, each user (individual or legal entity) working with the platform is assigned a unique digital identifier that verifies their identity and confirms transactions. Problems
The main problem is indivisibility. The NEO token cannot be broken down into pieces of different denominations, as happens with Bitcoin and many other altcoins. Anyone who follows blockchain news has probably heard about how China has stepped up its efforts to combat miners. The government has committed itself to a complete cessation of all mining operations.
